TAB, Business Leaders Discuss Supply Chain Resiliency with U.S. Department of Commerce

Last week, the Texas Association of Business (TAB) had the honor of hosting Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Industry & Analysis Grant T. Harris for a productive roundtable discussion on July 17, 2024. This gathering brought together representatives from the Department of Commerce, business leaders, and key industry stakeholders to delve into supply chain resilience conversations that have a direct impact on economic and national security interests.

The focal point of our discussion was a shared commitment to enhancing the resilience of supply chains across America. The Department of Commerce's proactive efforts through its Supply Chain Center, aimed at addressing vulnerabilities and fortifying economic resilience nationwide, are not just crucial, but also a source of reassurance as we continue to strengthen this sector.

Recognizing the critical role of robust supply chains in sustaining economic growth, the Texas Association of Business emphasized the need for strategic collaboration between government agencies and private sector leaders. Such partnerships strengthen domestic supply chains and bolster global competitiveness for U.S. industry partners. By aligning efforts, we can better navigate challenges and seize opportunities in an increasingly interconnected global economy.

Assistant Secretary Harris reaffirmed the government's unwavering commitment to this matter, saying:

"We are focused on building stronger, more resilient supply chains that support American jobs, businesses, and communities. Engaging with industry is essential, as is hearing firsthand about the opportunities and challenges facing U.S. companies.  Our supply chain resiliency efforts have greatly benefited from close collaboration with the private sector, and we look forward to engaging with industry stakeholders in Texas as we work together to tackle shared challenges and strengthen America’s supply chains.”

TAB also recognizes that to remain competitive, maximize employment opportunities in Texas and America, and continue our impressive economic growth trajectory, it’s crucial to ensure the U.S.-Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA) remains intact. Partnering with our neighbors Mexico and Canada makes us stronger in the competition against China and other regions, which is why we will continue to advocate for and support the strengthening of this critical trade bloc.

Within the USMCA framework, Texas is an essential trade gateway that is uniquely positioned to drive innovation and revitalization in American manufacturing. The Lone Star State's commitment to creating high-quality jobs and enhancing economic and national security through supply chain enhancement will remain unwavering. We are proud to champion initiatives ensuring Texas remains at the forefront of manufacturing excellence, contributing significantly to America's prosperity.

Securing and strengthening supply chains is imperative, particularly in critical sectors such as semiconductors and critical minerals. By reducing dependency on foreign sources and fostering a resilient supply chain ecosystem, we empower Texas businesses to continue to thrive in the global marketplace. This approach safeguards our economic interests and enhances our national security posture.

Reflecting on the insights shared during this roundtable, it becomes clear that the path to economic resilience and national security lies in collaborative innovation and steadfast commitment. With strong partnerships between government and industry, Texas stands poised to lead the charge in strengthening America's supply chains. TAB is continuing to work with our members and stakeholders to address challenges and utilize key opportunities to strengthen both domestic and international supply chain, ensuring that both Texas and America continue to prosper on the global stage.
