Today TAB was honored to host Dr. Alfonso Martinez Muñoz, the Secretary of Environment for Nuevo León, alongside three former secretaries of state. The room was full of business leaders and stakeholders including Adriana Cruz, executive director of Economic Development & Tourism for the Office of Governor Greg Abbott. TAB CEO Glenn Hamer kicked off the event, highlighting that trade with Mexico makes up 5% (or roughly $2 trillion) of Texas' GDP. He applauded Nuevo León Governor, Samuel Alejandro García, for his partnership with Texas Governor Greg Abbott, as seen in the signing of the Border Security Memorandum of Understanding, which will increase security and lawful commerce. TAB recently launched its Mexico Trade and Investment Policy Council to help private sector executives and policy makers understand and navigate the complex dynamics of the Texas-Mexico business relationship.
Former Texas Secretary of State and TAB Board member, Rolando Pablos, has been instrumental in launching the Council, alongside TAB Board Vice Chairman, Massey Villarreal, and TAB’s VP of International Affairs, David Zapata.
The Council recognizes and values the many Mexican-owned businesses that are currently paying property taxes, contributing to our state’s economy and employing Texans. There is opportunity to build on those investments by recruiting business that want to expand into Texas. Rolando believes a missing link in the Texas-Mexico relationship is a convener, like TAB, that can help equip businesses with the right resources and connect them to the appropriate economic development teams. Adriana Cruz, executive director of Economic Development & Tourism for the Office of Governor Greg Abbott, recently talked to Site Selection Magazine about how Texas is already working on earning its 11th Governor's Cup. TAB advocates for policies that are business friendly on behalf of its members, to retain and attract companies to our state. While visiting TAB, Secretary Dr. Alfonso Martinez Munoz gave a presentation on the policies he is promoting to protect air and water quality. Some of the things he is working on are growing air monitoring stations, waste management, combating main polluters, as well as promoting water saving, reutilization and reuse programs.
