A Year Later: Texas Stands Strong with Israel

Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of the horrific Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel, an event that shook the world and forever changed the lives of countless families. As we reflect on the devastating events of October 7, 2023, we remember the innocent lives lost and pray for the release of those still held hostage, including seven Americans. Our commitment to standing with Israel did not end on that tragic day, nor does our remembrance. We will continue to carry the memory of what happened, honoring the strength of the Israeli people and the enduring bonds between Texas and Israel.

This summer, the Texas Association of Business (TAB) had the privilege of leading a bipartisan delegation of Texas legislators and state leaders to Israel. This trip, which served as both a trade mission to strengthen our economic relationship and a show of solidarity, offered our delegation firsthand insights into the incredible resilience of the Israeli people. Despite the profound challenges they face, their resolve to rebuild and innovate is inspiring.

Texas and Israel have long shared a rich history of collaboration, rooted in common values of innovation, resilience, and economic growth. The relationship between our two regions has grown through cultural and economic exchanges, particularly in sectors like technology, agriculture, and defense. Texas is home to a vibrant Israeli community, and Israeli companies continue to choose Texas as a prime destination for expansion. This enduring partnership has fostered job creation, increased trade, and shared advancements in cutting-edge industries.

Glenn Hamer, President and CEO of TAB, reflected on the significance of this anniversary: “The attacks of October 7, 2023, were a stark reminder of the threats Israel faces every day. As we honor those who lost their lives and pray for the release of the hostages, including seven Americans, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to Israel. The Texas business community stands in solidarity with our Israeli friends, and we will continue to work together to strengthen our economic and cultural bonds in the face of adversity.”

Throughout our visit to Israel, we engaged with influential leaders, explored renowned universities, and visited innovative businesses and economic development organizations. These interactions underscored the many commonalities between Texas and Israel, particularly in sectors such as artificial intelligence, defense technology, water management, and space exploration.

TAB has made significant efforts to deepen economic ties with Israel, including the signing of a Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Israel’s leading startup-focused organizations, academic institutions, and the leading Israeli Chamber of Commerce. These collaborations are designed to strengthen venture capital relations and ensure that groundbreaking Israeli startups have the resources they need to expand and prosper in Texas. By fostering such partnerships, we can further enhance our state’s booming technology sector and create new opportunities for economic growth.

Massey Villarreal, Chairman of TAB, emphasized the importance of continuing to support Israel beyond October 7: “We cannot let our remembrance end on this anniversary. Israel’s strength in the face of unimaginable tragedy is a powerful testament to its people. The Texas business community is committed to standing with Israel—not just in words, but in action. Our collaboration with Israeli entrepreneurs and leaders will not only benefit Texas but also show the world that we will not waver in our support for our allies.”

As we move forward, the Texas business community remains steadfast in its commitment to Israel. By harnessing our combined expertise, creativity, and determination, we can create a future filled with promise for both Texas and Israel—one of our closest friends and partners. Together, we have the power to drive meaningful change, build stronger economic ties, and honor the memory of October 7 by continuing to stand with Israel in its time of need.

Our hearts remain with the hostages and their families, and we will forever carry the memory of the horrific events of October 7 with us as we pray for a future of peace.
